Subject-Area Methods

Learning Designers will enter the program selecting one of four subject-area concentrations: English, History, Math, or Science.  Throughout the two years they will study under the guidance of masters in their content area.  Coursework in this strand will comprise of advanced methods, literacy in their content area, and a culminating practicum.

 

 

 

Throughout the program participants will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of courses aimed to support their understanding of foundational learning theory.  Please note some courses are required while others are offered as electives. Some examples of courses include:

- Tools for Assessment

- Motivational Sciences

- Deeper Learning

- Learning and the Brain

We know establishing an ethic of care and excellence is one of the most crucial aspects of designing successful learning environments. Throughout their time in the program Learning Designers experience coursework aimed to provided them with tools to cultivate a postive, productive environment as well as support their own personal development. These courses include work in:

- Restorative Justice

- Cultural Competency and Cultural Humility

- Communities of Practice

- The Foundations of Group Work

- Meditation

- The Role of Critique Groups

It is hard to imagine any human endeavor, particularly something as complex as designing learning environments, that does not benefit from the right kind of preparation. With this in mind we've thoughtfully designed a vigorous, robust course path where our participants can gain the skills and tools they need to design the very best learning environments.

A differentiating factor of the Learning Designer Lab is the coursework aimed to instill design thinking skills in participants. Our coursework strives to provide participants with the tools they need to carefully combine content, pedagogy, and aesthetics to create robust learning environments. Coursework in the design thinking strands includes:
